Map 7: Vills and Berewicks Named to Wapentakes

We can see from Map 7 that here in Derbyshire (which can be compared with Map 3) there was considerable competition for shares in various land uses, in both fertile lowlands and in uplands (including the lead-mining district by Longendale). Though the millstone grit was here, as in Staffordshire, less attractive the other uplands of Derbyshire have always possessed unusually fertile soils. We can see from this that the picture ‘on the ground’, even when restricted only to agriculture, was far from simple. In more fecund shires the patchwork of berewicks and local arrangements was even more complicated and so verbal depositions had to be taken at face value while the clerks attempted simultaneously to maintain some unitary consistency.
